TASEK GELUGOR:
The Fire and Rescue Department in Penang will clean up the area in Bukit Tok Alang oil palm plantation believed to have been used to store mercury that has contaminated six houses in the vicinity.

Its state operations officer, M Vijayan, said information on the location of the chemical was obtained through witnesses’ statements and inspection of the area.

“The operation to clean up the six contaminated houses was completed around 8pm and the department managed to identify the area where the chemical was kept.

“We will resume clean-up works at the plantation at 9am tomorrow. As of now, we have not yet identified the owner of the chemical,” he said last night.

He said 26 fire and rescue officers and personnel were involved in the operation today, assisted by the Hazardous Materials Unit from the department’s headquarters in Putrajaya.
