GEORGE TOWN:
The alignment for Penang’s ambitious cable car project between George Town and Butterworth interferes with shipping routes, Transport Minister  Liow Tiong Lai said today.

He said the port authorities in Penang had objected to the alignment presented.

They had asked that the alignment for the proposed route be changed so that sea routes were not affected, he added.

“They will have to comply with certain conditions set by the Transport Ministry if they want to continue.

“Ideally, we would prefer a change in alignment,” he said at a press conference at the Penang Port Commission offices here today.

Liow said his ministry was still waiting for the Penang Government to respond with the new alignment.

The 5km Penang Sky Cab was proposed to connect Gat Lebuh Noordin and Penang Sentral in Butterworth.

Penang Sentral is located near Penang Port Sdn Bhd’s busy North Butterworth Container Terminal and a host of other related wharves.

It was reported that the state government project was expected to be completed by 2018.

It was proposed to have 40 cabins, transporting 1,000 people every hour.
