PETALING JAYA:
The only MCA executive councillor (exco) in the Kedah state government, Dr Leong Yong Kong has quit the party in protest against the hudud bill issue, Oriental Daily reported today.

According to the report, Leong, who is the exco for environment, Chinese and Indian community affairs, health and unity said, however, he would not resign from the exco post.

He said this was because he was not at fault in the matter, adding his decision would remain until there were new developments regarding the issue.

Leong said he would leave it to Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Ahmad to decide on his fate as an exco.

FMT’s attempts to contact Leong were unsuccessful.

Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s Private Members’ Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) 2016 was unexpectedly brought forward.

The amendments seek to allow the Kelantan Government to impose all hudud punishments, save the death sentence, for those convicted under shariah laws.

The Bill was originally listed as the last item to be debated in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

However, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said proposed for it to jump queue, seconded by Deputy Works Minister Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

Though the motion was passed, Hadi requested that the debate on the Bill be postponed till the next Dewan Rakyat meeting to allow MPs to have more time to prepare and debate on it.

Liow had then said it was in the dark about the plans to debate the bill and believed it was the outcome of discussions between PAS and Umno.

He said allowing PAS to debate the bill went against the Barisan Nasional spirit, and MCA would be submitting their objections through internal channels.
