SHAH ALAM:
Selangor Amanah Youth says its machinery is ready to roll for the upcoming Sungai Besar by-election even if the candidate is from PKR.

Its chief Abbas Azmi said members of his wing would abide by any decision the Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council made regarding the by-election scheduled to take place on June 18.

“We have reached an agreement, if PKR is chosen, we will continue working for PKR,” he told reporters at the Selangor Pakatan Youth press conference at the state Amanah headquarters here today.

Abbas however expressed his wing’s desire to have Amanah serve as Pakatan Harapan’s representative for the Sungai Besar by-election.

“This is because Amanah replaces PAS (in the Opposition coalition). This is our firm stand,” he said, alluding to how Sungai Besar was traditionally a seat PAS contested in.

“If PKR is destined to be chosen, we will accept it on the basis of Pakatan Harapan’s consensus,” Abbas added.

Also present at the press conference were DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) chief Eric Teh Hoong Kiet and treasurer Muhammad Syakir Ameer.

PKR Youth however did not attend as its chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and other state leaders were in another meeting.

PKR is reportedly interested in the Sungai Besar seat with its Deputy President Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is also Selangor Menteri Besar, saying his party stood a better chance at appealing to both the Malays and Chinese electorate there as opposed to either PAS or Amanah who would have a greater appeal only among the Malays.

The Sungai Besar seat became vacant when its incumbent Noriah Kasnon died in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak, on May 5.
