4 months’ jail for using name of Johor royalty to cheat

JOHOR BAHRU:
A labourer, who used the name of a Johor royalty member to cheat a laundry operator was jailed four months and fined RM4,000 by a magistrate’s court here Wednesday.

Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias passed the sentence when Augastin Alfred Netto, 52, of Jalan Mariamah here pleaded guilty to a charge read by an interpreter in Tamil.

Mohd Azlan also ordered Netto to serve a year’s jail if he failed to pay the fine.

According to the charge, the labourer cheated Tan Bee Choo, 56, at a premises in Taman Century here about noon on Sept 13 last year by claiming to be an employee of the Johor Palace IT unit, and was the “middleman” to obtain a cut from Tan from a bank loan.

He later induced Tan to hand over RM37,000 to him but after checking with the bank, the victim found there was no such deduction given by the bank as alleged by Netto.
