KUALA LUMPUR:
Local authorities have been urged to suspend new development projects in all areas that are at risk of experiencing flash floods until the problem is resolved.

Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Hamim Samuri said projects in the areas concerned would only make things worse when it rained.

“According to surveys by JPS (Department of Irrigation and Drainage), the flash floods that have occurred in the Klang Valley were due to developments which did not adhere to given technical aspects.

“Among them are drainage systems that do not comply with the guidelines in the Environmentally Friendly Drainage Manual (MSMA),” he said, when winding up the debate on a special motion requesting the Federal Government to solve flooding problems and speed up the implementation of flood mitigation plans in the Klang parliamentary constituency yesterday.

The motion, submitted by Klang MP Charles Santiago, was the first special motion passed under Standing Order 18, to be debated in the Special Chamber at the Dewan Rakyat here.
