GEORGE TOWN:
The State Public Accounts Committee (PAC) should be headed by a non-DAP representative to ensure greater transparency, a state PAC member suggested today.

Muhammad Farid Saad (BN-Pulau Betong) said this was to ensure the ongoing inquiry into the RM6.3 billion undersea tunnel and paired roads project was seen through an “unbiased lens”.

“The PAC should have revealed its report at this sitting of the assembly.

“It was imperative for the undersea tunnel issue to be looked into,” he said when debating the motion of thanks to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s opening address at the State Legislative Assembly today.

Farid said to have a PKR backbencher blow his top was a telling sign that it was not just the state Opposition that was demanding to see the PAC report.

“We should have a PKR backbencher as PAC chief to overlook the project,” he said.

Currently, DAP’s A Tanasekharan is state PAC chief.

The nine-member PAC includes Farid, Yap Soo Huey (DAP-Pulau Tikus), Dr Norlela Ariffin (PKR-Penanti), Dr T Jayabalan (PKR-Batu Uban), Mohd Salleh Bin Man (Pas-Permatang Pasir) Mahmud Zakaria (BN-Sungai Acheh), Omar Abdul Hamid (BN-Permatang Berangan) and Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain (BN-Teluk Bahang).
