KUALA LUMPUR:
Passenger service charges will not be raised yet as the Transport Ministry is still reviewing the proposal by Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

“We are still reviewing the new charges proposed,” Transport Deputy Minister Aziz Kaprawi told the Dewan Rakyat today, adding that his ministry is taking into account the last time it was raised, which was 2011.

He said the government is supposed to review the charges every five years.

Aziz was replying to a question from Mohd Zaim Abu Hasan (Parit-BN) who had asked on what basis was the MAHB asking for a raise in the passenger service fees.

Zaim said he was concerned that the recent ten-fold hike in charges imposed by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) will see an increase in the cost of air fares.

“Only MAHB’s passenger service charges affect the ticket price,” Aziz said, clarifying that DCA’s new charges will have no impact on passengers because it is imposed on airlines for using the airspace, air traffic facilities and other facilities in relation to their operations flying in and out of the country.

The minister said current passenger service charges at klia2 is RM32 for international passengers and RM6 for domestic passengers, while at the KLIA main terminal it is RM65 for international passengers and RM9 for domestic passengers.

MAHB managing director Badlisham Ghazali had said last month any decision on the review of the fees would depend on the government.
