KUALA LUMPUR: A woman believed to have lost RM2 million in a “love scam” has been urged to come forward and lodge a police report.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said this would assist cops in apprehending the cyber criminal involved in the scam.

“We know of this case and we are tracking her down so she can lodge a police report.

“Maybe she is ashamed. We cannot let these things happen. I hope this woman will come forward to help in our investigation.”

He said this at a press conference at Bukit Aman federal police headquarters here today, after a cheque handover ceremony by DRB-Hicom for air-conditioner units to be installed at the Police Academy’s surau.

Khalid said police were monitoring the situation but said the woman’s cooperation could assist in arresting the culprit behind the scam.

Police are increasingly concerned over people being conned by such Internet love scams despite the wide publicity being given to such cases in newspapers and social media.

Khalid said not only women had fallen victim to such scams, but also men.

“Men have also become victims, but men do not want to lodge police reports.

“I want to advise men not to be fooled by the sweet talk of girls they meet on the Internet because you could become victims of romance scams.”

Earlier, Khalid, on Twitter, congratulated the police force for apprehending three foreigners believed to have been involved in eight love scam cases, involving a total of RM2.1 million.

“Congratulations PDRM for apprehending three (two of them Nigerians) in Cheras and Kajang.

“This wraps up eight romance scam cases involving losses of up to RM2.1 million,” he had tweeted via @KBAB51.
