Aziz: Rayani Air serves as lesson to government

The authorities will be stricter in the issuance of airline licences in future and will study a proposal by a company to buy shares in Rayani Air.

KUALA LUMPUR: The situation surrounding Rayani Air is the first faced by the national aviation industry, says Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi.

The ruckus it has caused is a dark spot in aviation history, he added.

Aziz said it also served as a lesson for the government, which will be stricter in the issuance of airline licences in future.

This would also include checks on the applicants’ financial background, he added.

“After this, the government will be more meticulous in approving any airline to operate here.

“We have to beef up and be stricter with the SOP (standard operation procedures) for all airlines,” he said to reporters outside the Parliament lobby here today.

“Now, we have the Malaysian Aviation Commission that will look after (all these procedures and requirements).

“So, it’s their responsibility to make sure all airlines are financially sound.”

Aziz also denied claims that the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) had overlooked certain conditions in issuing the first shariah-complainant airline with an operating licence.

Elaborating, he said the airline’s problems boiled down to financial and management issues.

“When they first presented (their proposal) to the government, they had experienced personnel on board.

“However, later on, some of these experienced personnel left the company and this jeopardised the management of the company.”

On April 11, Rayani Air had its operating licence suspended due to financial difficulties.

Aziz said a private company had offered to buy over some of the airline’s shares.

The company’s report had been handed over to the DCA for study before the government decides on the next course of action, he added.
