PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian student Christine Jiaxin Lee, dubbed the “accidental millionaire” in Australia is said to have bought one of the most sought-after handbags in the world during her multi-million ringgit shopping spree.

The Sydney Morning Herald, quoting court documents, said Lee had one of the rarest Hermes Birkin handbags, a Himalayan Birkin made of the skins of specially-bred crocodiles, which would have cost about A$150,000 (RM440,000).

Birking handbags command waiting lists of up to six years, with prices starting at about US$12,000 (RM48,000).

The 30cm handcrafted tote was one among scores of luxury purchases, such as handbags and Hermes scarves, clothes, jewellery, mobile phones, a “selfie” camera and a deluxe Dyson vacuum cleaner listed in the court document.

Lee went on a shopping spree after Westpac bank accidentally granted her an unlimited overdraft in July 2014, which allowed Lee to blow as much as A$4.6 million over the next 11 months.

Lee moved to Australia to study five years ago and is reported to be a third-year chemical engineering student in Sydney.

She is alleged to have visited up to five designer boutiques in Sydney and spent up to $310,000 in a day, the documents showed.

The Herald reported that Westpac froze her account in April 2015 and served her with court-issued notices to produce the goods.

Twenty-seven items totalling about A$1 million, including a Cartier bracelet, 16 Christian Dior handbags and four Hermes handbags, were handed in by Lee in late April.

In May, the Supreme Court made orders allowing Westpac to seize any assets to repay the remaining $3,486,612.07.

The Herald said Lee had allegedly used a PayPal account in the beginning, buying 52 items. These included: a Sony “digital selfie” camera, two Casio cameras, a Dyson vacuum cleaner, Christian Louboutin “Equestria boots”, Chanel cashmere pillows, two smartphones, 13 Hermes scarves and dozens of handbags, including the Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin.

She is believed to have transferred money to a Commonwealth Bank account, using it for 20 shopping sprees between January and April 2015, spending $1.2 million, the report said.

These included A$20,050 at Chanel, A$6,885 at Hermes, and A$1,795 at Christian Louboutin in one day.

Four days later, she spent A$42,695 at Bvlgari, Christian Dior and Hermes; A$332,310 in three further visits to Christian Dior store in Sydney, A$54,640 at Chanel and A$15,553 at an online boutique Far Fetch.

Most of the items have not been recovered, the Herald said.

Lee has been charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime, and has been ordered to live with her boyfriend while on bail pending the trial.

She was declared an unregistered bankrupt in September and was arrested at Sydney Airport on May 4 as she tried to board a flight home to Malaysia using an emergency passport.
