Fake news about ‘woman swallowed by python’ goes viral

Fire & Rescue director says no emergency call was received, 'reports' circulated online are not true.

The Perak Fire and Rescue Department has denied that a woman was swallowed by a python in Taiping, reports about which had spread widely by instant messaging.

The department’s director, Yahya Madis said they had not received any emergency call about the purported incident.

“The messages about a python supposedly swallowing a human at Jalan Aulong, Taiping, are not true,” he said in a statement here last night. “It has gone viral and re-circulated by WhatsApp.”

The viral message contains a photograph of a python caught by firemen which was handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.
