PUTRAJAYA:
The by-elections in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar will be held simultaneously on June 18, the Election Commission (EC) announced today, with nomination for the two parliamentary seats fixed for June 5.

EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah, who made the announcement at the commission’s headquarters, also said that early voting has been set for June 14.

Hashim said there were a total of 42,655 eligible voters in Sungai Besar and 32,949 in Kuala Kangsar.

The voter registry will be released on Apr 22 on the EC website, while hard copies will be available from Apr 23.

Hashim also said the estimated costs for both by-elections was RM2.7 million.

He said this was the second time a by-election was held during Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month.

“We hope that this means we will see less insults being thrown about,” he said at a press conference here today.

The by-elections for the two parliamentary seats were triggered by the deaths of its incumbents, Noriah Kasnon and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak last week.

In the 2013 General Election, Barisan Nasional’s Noriah beat PAS’ Mohamed Salleh M Husin with a 399-vote majority.

Noriah garnered 18,695 votes while Salleh garnered 18,296 votes. It was her third consecutive win in a general election.

Most of the voters in the constituency are aged 30-49, representing around 48% of voters.

In Kuala Kangsar, BN’s Wan Mohammad emerged the victor in a three-way contest against independent Kamilia Ibrahim and PAS’ Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah.

Wan Mohammad won by 1,082 votes, after garnering 14,218 votes against Khalil’s 13,136. Kamilia lost her deposit after receiving only 447 votes.

Wan Mohammad was a first-time candidate in Kuala Kangsar, after having been the assemblyman for Bukit Chandan (a state seat under Kuala Kangsar) for one term. He took over the parliamentary seat from former Umno Wanita chief Rafidah Aziz.

A majority of voters in the constituency are aged 30-59, representing over 63% of voters.
