KUALA LUMPUR:
An immigrant worker employed by a company to work as a security guard was given a pump-action shotgun although he was not authorised to carry the firearm.

He was one of 86 immigrants, among 92 security guards, working in the city detained by police for various offences, including drug addiction, abuse of work permits, and invalid and fake identity documents.

Kuala Lumpur Police Deputy chief Abdul Hamid Mohd Ali said the errant security guards were detained during integrated operations since last Wednesday.

He said of the 86 immigrant security guards nabbed, three tested positive for drugs, 60 had invalid identity documents and 23 had abused their work permits, had expired visas and fake identity documents.

He told a press conference here today that the two-day integrated operations involved the Kuala Lumpur Licensing Branch, CID Management Department, Narcotics CID and police station chiefs.

Some 815 checks were carried out at several locations, including schools, shopping malls, banks, goldsmith shops and money changers.
