KUCHING:
A voter turnout of 39 percent was reported at 1pm as polling continued in the elections to the Sarawak state assembly.

Election Commission chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah said most of the polling centres will close at 5pm while some earlier, as early as 9am, depending on location and number of voters.

The 1,754 polling stations opened at 8am and at 10.30am, 13 polling stations had been closed.

Mohd Hashim said the voting process was progressing smoothly for all 80 of the 82 seats contested today, except for a minor incident whereby a passage used by voters to enter the polling stream collapsed.

According to Sarawak EC director Takun Suggah, a wooden corridor at SK Kuala Annau, Tatau, about 70km from Bintulu, collapsed at 10am, resulting in 40 voters falling down and one voter suffering a minor injury.

The school was being used as a polling station for the Jepak state assembly seat.

Among those who have already cast their ballots today are caretaker Chief Minister Adenan Satem and BN’s Satok candidate Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg, who voted at SK Merpati Jepang.

The Yang Dipertua of Sarawak Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud also cast his vote at the same school.

BN candidate for Bukit Saban, Douglas Uggah Emas, the state minister of plantation industries and commodities, voted at the Wilson Begat Bakir Longhouse in Penon, Ulu Paku, Betong.

Other federal ministers from Sarawak who have cast their ballots included Rohani Abdul Karim, Richard Riot, Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Fadillah Yusof.
