PETALING JAYA:
Hi, my name is “Saw Jet Star.”

Imagine the number of times this boy will have to explain he was named after an airline because his mother gave birth to him on board one of its planes in mid-flight.

The woman, a Myanmar national went unexpectedly into labour while en route to Yangon from Singapore last Friday via Jetstar Asia.

According to an article in Singapore Today, a Jetstar Asia spokesperson said the woman decided to name her son after the airline in appreciation of the care she received on board from both its crew and fellow passengers.

With the help of the Jetstar Asia flight 3K583 crew, as well as three doctors who happened to be on the same flight, baby Jet Star, who weighed around 2.9kg, was safely delivered.

Both mother and child are said to be in good health and have been discharged from a local hospital in Yangon.

Singapore Today also reported that the mother’s family name is “Star”, while “Saw” is a male gender reference for people from a specific ethnic group in Myanmar.

Baby Jet Star is the first baby to be delivered on a Jetstar Asia flight, the airline said.

To celebrate the arrival of the bundle of joy, Jetstar Asia made a contribution of baby supplies worth S$1,000 to the happy parents.

According to Jetstar Asia’s website, women passengers are allowed to travel on flights less than four hours up to their 40th week of pregnancy. However, after their third trimester (28 weeks or more), they must have on hand specific documentation from their doctors before being given the green light to fly.
