KOTA BARU:
A five-metre python became an unwelcome visitor at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pasir Pekan, Tumpat, here today.

The school’s headmaster, Mohd Hasmy Hashim, said the school’s security guard found the snake in a drain in the school compound at 6.30am.

“Luckily, at that time, many of the pupils had not arrived yet and we contacted the Department of Civil Defence (JPAM) immediately to catch the snake,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, Kelantan Education Department Principal Assistant Director (Student Affairs), Ahmad Yani Muhammad said schools in the state had been urged to organise joint efforts to clean the school compounds of bushes which could attract dangerous animals like snakes.

He said the school’s security personnel should also patrol their compounds early in the morning to check areas where the snakes may have entered.

Meanwhile, in Tanah Merah, JPAM District Operations Officer Mohd Fadli Hassan said since last February, JPAM had received 88 emergency cases of locals finding snakes in their premises.

According to him, the department received 28 such calls in February, 33 in March, and 27 as of April 26.

“The latest case was on Tuesday (April 26) when we caught a seven-metre long cobra in a house in Kampung Lubuk Agol, Chawas here,” he said.
