PKR suggests forming unity govt in Terengganu

This is the best option as fresh elections will cost money and burden rakyat, says Terengganu PKR chairman.

KUALA TERENGGANU:
Terengganu PKR has suggested that a unity government be formed to resolve the alleged crisis between the Sultan of Terengganu and Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

State PKR chairman Azan Ismail claimed this was the best move compared with changing the MB or to dissolve the state assembly as that would further complicate the situation.

The formation of a unity government would also return the rakyat’s confidence in the state government, he added.

“We can imagine the palace has lost confidence in Ahmad Razif as the Sultan has stripped him of his titles. This also means Ahmad Razif must step down as MB.”

At present, the Terengganu state assembly is made up of 17 BN representatives, including former MB Ahmad Said, who is said to be standing on the fence, as he does not support Ahmad Razif leading the state, 14 from PAS and one from PKR.

Speaking to FMT, Azan said there were now three options, with the first one being to appoint a new MB.

“If the new MB is from Umno, it will result in dissatisfaction among the Opposition because BN now has 16 seats and the Opposition has 16 seats, as Ahmad Said appears to no longer show support (for BN led by Ahmad Razif).”

The second option was to dissolve the state assembly and call for an election.

“To me, this is not suitable as GE14 is near. If we dissolve now, when the general election comes, we will have another election.

“We will incur costs and the rakyat will be burdened by the elections. Our focus to develop the state and help the rakyat will be hindered.”

This, according to Azan, is why he felt the best option was to have a unity government.

“What is important is that both BN and the Opposition agree on a unity government until the next GE and to leave it to the palace to appoint a new MB from either side,” Azan said, also calling for an immediate solution to the crisis.

Earlier, Terengganu PAS commissioner Satiful Bahri Mamat said the party was not in favour of the idea of forming a unity government, instead wanting the rakyat to decide via an election.
