PETALING JAYA: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has offered its expertise to help the government and other related agencies address recent complaints about sudden hikes in electricity bills.

In a statement today, IEM president Tan Yean Chin called for electrical companies to produce energy-saving equipment and for all electrical products to have efficiency ratings.

“IEM’s Electrical Engineering Technical Division is willing to assist the government and other related agencies with the necessary technical advice to improve energy-efficient equipment.

“Manufacturers and importers of products like televisions, refrigerators, domestic fans and air-conditioners (ACs) must have the Energy Efficient label on their products, before they are sold to customers,” Tan said.

He also advised household users of ACs to set temperatures between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius.

“Also, have a combination of the use of fans with ACs, it may result in a lower use of ACs, and lower electricity bills,” Tan said, adding that regular servicing of household electrical appliances would also ensure their optimum operation.

Consumers have taken to the social media recently to express anger at the sudden and sharp hike in their electricity bills, which service provider Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) attributed to the persistent hot weather.
