Salleh: Adenan made the opposition back down on takeover

PETALING JAYA:
Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem was praised today as a change-maker whose policies had caused opposition politicians to back down from their intention of wresting power in the state from the Barisan Nasional.

“Sarawakians are asking what more can Adenan do and what more will he do” in a full term of five years, said Sabah Umno leader Salleh Said Keruak. “This is currently the talk on the ground,” said Salleh in a blog article today.

Salleh said the Sarawak election on May 7 would be a historic event, as more than half of Sarawak’s citizens had grown up with Taib Mahmud as the state’s leader. Now more than 500,000 would be voting for the first time, under a new chief minister, while about 100,000 were those who did not vote at the last elections in 2011.

“Adenan has been in office for just two years and he has already not only laid the groundwork but has been able to produce results as well. This is a remarkable achievement by any standards,” Salleh said. “Feedback from the ground shows that the majority of the people of Sarawak are happy with what they have seen over the last two years.”

Salleh said the opposition was contesting the election with the promise of bringing about change but Adenan was not making promises of change but had shown that he can bring about changes and had done so.

Among Adenan’s bold moves was to reject the use of the term “pendatang” and to refer to the Chinese community as Anak Sarawak, abolishing quit rent, standing up for the equality of women by proposing more women candidates, giving RM5 million to Chinese schools, and launching the Graduate Enhancement Training Sarawak programme.

Salleh said Adenan had done so much that the opposition was no longer talking about taking over the state but merely to deny Barisan Nasional a two-third majority in the state assembly.
