ALOR STAR:
A 10-year-old boy watching television at home sustained head injuries when a tree, believed to be 100 years old, crashed through the roof in Sik yesterday.

The boy’s mother, Norhamidah Ismail, 33, said Muhammad Ammar Ashraf Mohamad Zamri was watching television in the living room with his younger brother Mohamad Haziq Hibatullah, 9, while she was in the kitchen.

“It was raining heavily during a thunderstorm that evening. When the rain stopped, I heard a loud noise from the middle part of my house at about 7.30pm. I rushed to look for my boys but it was dark as there was a power failure at the same time.

“I managed to find them but did not realise that Ammar was injured. I only found out when told by a neighbour who came to help,” she said at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital today.

Norhamidah said the neighbour provided them temporary shelter and was surprised to see her son’s head bleeding and immediately compressed it with a cloth before taking him to the Sik Hospital for treatment.

Her son had suffered a fracture on his skull and nose, and received stitches on his head.

“I was grateful that he was conscious and able to talk when he was being treated. He is in stable condition. Thank God his younger brother was not injured,” she said.

Norhamidah, who had been renting the house for the past 10 years hoped that the authorities would cut down old trees in the area as she was worried such trees might pose a danger to other residents.

Meanwhile, Sik 1Malaysia Volunteer Brigade director Mahadzir Abdul Hamid, who is Jeneri State Assemblyman, said 18 volunteers deployed to the scene to clear the fallen tree as well as clean the area.
