KUALA LUMPUR:
The nails on the fingers and toes of murdered Deputy Public Prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais were “missing” and could not be found, the High Court heard on Thursday.

Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s (HKL) pathologist Dr Nurliza Abdullah, 51 told the court that she found his nails missing when she was examining his remains.

She could not find them even inside the gunny sack used to wrap his body.

“When we took his body out from the sack, his nails were nowhere to be found.

“We could not find them in the drum (used to dispose of Kevin’s body) too. There was only cement, pebbles and liquid inside,” she said, when cross-examined by lawyer Geethan Ram Vincent.

Nurliza is the 11th prosecution witness, testifying at Kevin’s murder trial.

Geethan is representing army doctor Dr. R. Kuneseegaran, 53, charged with abetting six others in allegedly murdering Kevin on Sept 4 last year.

The others accused are G Gunasekaran, 48, R Dinishwaran, 24, A K Thinesh Kumar, 23, M Vishwanath, 26, student S Ninalan, 23 and debt collector S Ravi Chandran, 45.

The seven of them were said to have killed the senior prosecutor after abducting him soon after he left his residence. All of them will face the mandatory death sentence if found guilty.

When asked by Geethan if the nails may have fallen off at some other place, Nurliza said, “There is no possibility of the nails falling off somewhere else.”

She disagreed with a question that the missing nails on the deceased was an extraordinary matter.

She said it happened because Kevin’s remains were in a process of decomposing, causing the skin on his limbs to peel off. She disagreed that his nails dropped off at a different place.

“I do not have a reason why his nails were not found. What was sure is the remains were in the process of decomposing, causing the skin to fall off,” Nurliza explained.

The hearing continues before Justice Azman Abdullah on Friday, Nurliza will continue to testify.
