KUALA LUMPUR:
Unlike other Asean countries, Putrajaya will focus on the job of widening Internet coverage instead of increasing Internet speed in the country.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said other Asean countries prioritised Internet speed and not coverage.

“That is why the Internet speed in Malaysia is slower than other Asean countries,” he said in a written reply to Izani Husin (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa), who enquired about the reason why Internet speed was slow in Malaysia compared to neighbouring countries in Asean.

Salleh said that because of the government’s focus on coverage over speed, the 2015 International Telecommunication Union in ICT Speed Index showed that Malaysia’s Internet coverage placing had improved from 71 to 64, among 167 countries.

He said the government would continue to focus on Internet coverage in high-impact economic zones, while improving portable Internet services in the country.
