Row over racial remarks after brawl by secondary school pupils

Ramasamy threatens to hold a demo to get an explanation from school head and senior assistant.

BUTTERWORTH:
Education authorities have been urged to investigate racial remarks purported to have been made by a secondary school principal and the senior assistant after a fight between two groups of pupils in Simpang Ampat.

Two boys were injured in the brawl in the school compound on Thursday, and parents of both pupils have lodged police reports. Police confirmed receiving the reports and said an investigation for rioting would take place.

The DAP’s P Ramasamy, who is MP for Batu Kawan and state assemblyman for Perai, had demanded that the racially-charged fights be investigated immediately.

He said the school’s headmistress and her senior assistant were purported to have stoked racial tension with remarks during the school assembly after the fights took place.

He said they were alleged to have said there was “no place for Indians in this school” and that Indian pupils were told not to pick fights with pupils of other races.

Ramasamy and a group of DAP politicians went to meet the school officials but were told that only parents were allowed to meet them.

He criticised the school’s lack of respect for a state executive councillor and deputy chief minister, and said a demonstration would be held at the state education department office in George Town.

State education officials did not want to comment.

The school has an enrolment of 1,100 pupils with a mixed racial composition.
