KUALA LUMPUR:
Hanipa Maidin (Amanah-Sepang) is urging Putrajaya to remove the legal condition requiring contributors to secure a guarantor when applying for loans from the Social Security Organisation (Socso).

He said this when debating the proposed Employee’s Social Security (Amendment) Bill 2015, tabled for a second reading today.

“There’s no need for the provision of a guarantor. 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) obtained loans guaranteed by the government.

“But those who apply for loans from Socso are poor. How are they supposed to find guarantors?” Hanipa asked the Dewan Rakyat, adding that an individual could be declared bankrupt if unable to service a loan of over RM30,000.

He further argued that individuals signing on as guarantors would also be pressured to accept the risk if the loans were not serviced.

“If certain individuals can get a donation of RM2.6 billion, then it is a different case. This is not in reference to any person, dead or alive,” Hanifa reassured everyone.
