TI-M: RM100m ministry scandal just the tip of the iceberg

Anti-corruption watchdog says incident involving Youth and Sports Ministry official highlights ‘weaknesses in the government procurement system’.

PETALING JAYA:
The arrest of a Youth and Sports Ministry senior official suspected of misappropriating RM100 million is “just the tip of the iceberg”, Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) said today.

In a statement, the anti-corruption watchdog wondered how such “systematic” fraud and corruption went unnoticed for six years and questioned if the scandal could have been avoided.
“Why was the officer not rotated given the high-risk nature of his job?

“How did the officer’s alleged expensive lifestyle, including luxury purchases, frequent overseas travels and unusual proximity with clients and vendors, go undetected?”

The arrest, TI-M said, also highlighted the inherent weaknesses in the government procurement system.

It then urged Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to act decisively to regain the trust and confidence of the public.

“The same call is made to all ministers and civil servants who oversee the disbursement of funds.

“They should at all times be mindful of their huge responsibility in carrying out their duties for the rakyat’s benefit.”

The people, it added, did not want corrupt and unethical traits embedded in the government and corporate culture.

MACC had last week nabbed a 56-year-old division secretary in the RM100 million case.

Officers seized assets from the suspect worth about RM20 million, including fine jewellery, 12 vehicles and designer handbags. They froze 69 bank accounts containing RM8.3 million.

The suspect is alleged to have flown first class to Europe, US and Australia at least once a month and had two houses under his name.

Also rounded up in the operation were at least 10 other individuals.
