Officials on gov’t business spared traffic summonses

Deputy Home Minister however says government officials must settle traffic summonses relating to speeding when using their private cars.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Government officials caught speeding while on official matters are exempted from having to settle their traffic summonses, says Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed, provided they inform the police that they were speeding in order to get to a government-related event on time.

The Pulai MP was quick however to remind officials and ministers that they still had to settle traffic summonses if they were caught speeding while driving their personal cars.

“I just paid RM300 for speeding while using my personal car.

“If we are using government cars for official matters and there is a need to speed, then we must explain this to the police when we are caught speeding.

“For example, when I’m late for a function and get stopped for speeding, then I have to explain the matter to the police.

“Don’t tell me if we use government cars to attend government events, we still need to pay for traffic summonses?

“Unless it was a traffic offence that I did in my personal capacity or it was done by my personal driver, then I must pay the summons,” he said when met by reporters at the lobby of Parliament here today.

When asked about the possibility of government officials abusing this “excuse” every time they broke traffic laws, Nur Jazlan said there was still a need to justify and explain the reason why they were speeding.

“Why focus on just government officials? Mostly it is non-government individuals who are always speeding. We are not asking for exemption when it involves our personal cars. But when using government cars, let’s be flexible.”

Nur Jazlan also explained that the Prime Minister’s car was usually driven at high speeds for security reasons.
