KUALA LUMPUR: The controversial RM2.6 billion donation was given to Prime Minister Najib Razak by the Saudi royal family without any conditions, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman said today.

“The fund was a personal donation made to the prime minister by the Saudi royal family without any conditions.

“In August 2013, he (Najib) returned RM2.03b (the balance) back to the Saudi royalty, as it was not used,” she said without elaborating on the identity of the royalty.

Azalina said this in reply to a question by Hee Loy Sian (PKR-Petaling Jaya Selatan), who had asked for the identity of the donor and the purpose of the donation.

He had also asked about the amount of money returned and the way it was returned.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) had last year reported about the donation deposited in Najib’s personal accounts and claimed it had come from 1MDB.

Najib has since been cleared by the Attorney-General of any wrongdoing in the matter.
