Integrity minister challenged to start investigations into RM1.5 billion claims of Mukhriz, Idris.

PETALING JAYA:
Federal integrity minister Paul Low has been accused of having proven that he has been “sleeping on the job”, despite his recent denials, for his lack of action on disclosures about Barisan Nasional’s (BN) general election expenditures.

The DAP’s parliamentary leader, Lim Kit Siang, described Low as possibly being “the only minister in the world responsible for integrity who is neither moved nor concerned about revelations of mega money politics and corruption.”

Lim was referring to remarks by former Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir that the BN spent RM1.5 billion, while Malacca chief minister Idris Harun had said it was more than RM1.5 billion.

Last week, Low had given an account of measures taken on integrity issues and said in a press interview that he was not sleeping on the job as claimed by critics.

However, Lim questioned what Low had done as integrity minister about the statement by Mukhriz that Prime Minister Najib Razak had revealed at an Umno meeting that the BN had spent RM1.5 billion on the 2013 general election.

Lim said the figure showed that the BN had outspent legal limits for election expenditure for all 222 parliamentary candidates by at least 34 times.

The amount allowed by law, RM200,000 per parliamentary candidate, would come to a total of RM44 million, while the RM1.5 billion figure stated by Najib was over 34 times the legal sum.

He questioned if Low knew how much was spent by BN in the entire campaign, and whether Low had begun action for a full investigation.
