Innocent until proven guilty, says Senate president

Abu Zahar gives a reminder that "a person who has not been proven guilty cannot be sentenced."

KUALA LUMPUR:
Dewan Negara president Abu Zahar Ujang has reminded all parties not to pass judgement on anyone without solid proof.

He said many parties today were inclined to be emotional and make judgement on a person who has not been found guilty.

“I want to remind that you can say anything, but the sanctity of the law must be preserved. A person who has not been proven guilty cannot be sentenced,” he said, commenting on claims of corruption connected to the country’s leadership.

He was speaking at the launch of the book Dayak Woman In The House written by Senate deputy president Senator Doris Sophia Brodie.

The book was launched by deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Also present were Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia and Parti Rakyat Sarawak president James Masing.

The book recounts Brodie’s experiences as a Senator and deputy president of the upper house.

Brodie was appointed Senator in March 2010 and is the first Sarawakian Dayak woman to be appointed the Deputy President of the Dewan Negara.

She was appointed on February 26, 2012, and her term as senator ended yesterday.

Brodie was born in Lutong, Miri, Sarawak on November 13, 1960 and began her career as a guest relations officer at the Miri Hospital (1978-1980). From 1990 to 1996, she worked with Sarawak Shell Berhad where she held several key positions.

Her involvement in politics began in 1986 when she joined the Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak before being appointed head of Wanita PRS in 2006.
