KUALA LUMPUR:
Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ibrahim today proposed to the Dewan Rakyat a “Democracy Guarantee Act” to strengthen democracy and ensure fair elections.

“I also propose that a parliamentary select committee be formed to formulate a Democracy Guarantee Act that will outline all the steps necessary to reform and strengthen the democracy … including to guarantee free and fair elections.”

The Permatang Pauh MP added that the law should be drafted and tabled in Parliament in six months.

Earlier, Wan Azizah had also suggested to the house to set up a truth and reconciliation commission to find out past wrongdoings by the government so that the country could move forward.

Among the issues that she suggested for the proposed commission to work on were the release of former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and the controversial RM2.6 billion donation which was channelled into Prime Minister Najib Razak’s private accounts.

“Najib has failed to govern the country. He should take responsibility for the 1MDB scandal, which has tarnished the country’s image.

“However, this is not just about changing the prime minister. This is also (about) bringing reforms to the system so that our dignity can be restored.”
