PETALING JAYA:
DAP lawmaker M. Kulasegaran’s motion seeking the drafting of new laws to prohibit unilateral conversion of children was placed on the Dewan Rakyat order paper today.

The Ipoh Barat MP, in his motion, proposed a new Bill to be drafted to prevent minors from being converted by any one of their parents.

“This House has to take note that a Bill should be drafted to prevent cases of minors being unilaterally converted, with proper law enforcement and in line with the Cabinet’s advice in 2009, which is that children should have their original religion, before the religious conversion took place, maintained,” the motion read.

The motion is 16th in line, with nine motions by the government up for debate in Parliament today.

Kulasegaran, who is a lawyer by profession, represented M. Indira Gandhi and S. Deepa – two Hindu women who had their children converted to Islam by their respective ex-husbands.

Indira lost her challenge when the Court of Appeal ruled that only the Shariah Court could decide on the validity of her three children’s conversion.

Deepa, meanwhile, gained custody of her daughter but her son was ordered to remain with her ex-husband.
