The website, launched by IRR Legal, is aimed at providing comprehensive definition of the law to members of the public.
“We have noted that there is a plethora of legal-related websites on the Internet, but it lacks a truly definitive one that provides legal support for Malaysians.
“Hence, AskLegal aims to fill this void,” IRR Legal General Manager Marina Suwendy said.
Apart from Malaysian law definitions, the website also posts current news and reports, legal articles and listings of legal events.
“The events include conferences and workshops and also a question-and-answer section where the public may pose questions,” the press statement said.
Marina gave an assurance the newly-launched website would not take over the job of lawyers.
It aims to make the journey of pursuing legal advice smoother.
“Our website is merely a catalyst to kick-start the public’s journey in obtaining proper legal advice.
“AskLegal’s stance is that the public must always seek the services of a practising advocate and solicitor,” she said.
At present, the website is in the process of collaborating with practising lawyers and qualified academicians from local universities such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa.
The website is also available to all Malaysian NGOs to spread awareness and reach out to the general public.
Women’s Aid Organisation Executive Director Sumitra Visvanathan said: “The WAO is pleased to collaborate with AskLegal in highlighting the issue of domestic violence.
“Domestic violence is an insidious and pervasive crime. All members of society should address this issue. We look forward to spreading this awareness together with AskLegal.”
