“There are more than three million Umno members. I believe that more than half of them have quit the party in their hearts. In fact, many more Umno leaders will eventually quit the party too,” she told FMT.
Anina added that many Umno members were currently disgruntled with the party’s current position, with many having the perception that Umno was being solely controlled by Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is also the party president.
“Umno is now a party for only Najib. It’s a party for thieves and their henchmen.”
She also said that personally, she was happy Mahathir had quit Umno as she could now carry on her struggles alongside the former premier, as they were both former members of the same party.
Elaborating further, Anina said that they had no intentions of joining any other party as their core struggle was to revive the “real Umno.”
“Our core struggle is to revive the ‘real Umno’. In fact, we do not wish to establish a new party,” she said.
Anina was sacked from Umno in September last year, after filing a suit against Najib, demanding he account for the movement of RM2.6 billion into his private bank accounts.
She was infamously known for a speech during the Langkawi Umno annual meeting last year, where she dismissed Najib’s claim of strong Umno support as nothing more than blatant lies.
