Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the reward was for bringing worldwide recognition and glory to Penang and Malaysia.
“This is the first time a Malaysian footballer has received global fame for the right reasons,” Lim said.
According to The Star, the funds for Faiz’s reward come from the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP).
On Tuesday, the 29-year-old Penang player became an overnight global sensation when he netted an astonishing knuckleball during the Penang-Pahang game in the Malaysia Super League.
He became an immediate contender for Fifa’s 2016 Puskas Award.
The Puskas Award is given to the player judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant or “most beautiful” goal within the year.
