Raja Bahrin: Umno was only pretending to support hudud

He says Jamil Khir Baharom had previously promised PAS that the government would support its proposal on hudud but now deputy minister Asyraf is backtracking.

PETALING JAYA:
All this while, Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) were only playing around with PAS when they said they would support the Islamist party’s struggle in implementing hudud in Malaysia, said Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Bahrin Shah.

He said this could be proven through the recent statement by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Islamic Affairs Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki that it was better to defer the implementation of hudud if justice could not be upheld.

He argued that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom had previously promised PAS the government would support its proposal on hudud if the Islamist party brought the motion to Parliament.

“After bringing the matter to Parliament three times, it has never been tabled to be debated.

“When the hudud proposal was sent to the Parliament Speaker in 2015, the few of us who are still PAS MPs, including Mahfuz Omar, were not informed of anything,” said the chairman of international affairs for Amanah in a statement today.

“We believe if were informed on the matter, at least we could give our opinions to avoid PAS from being cheated by Umno and BN.

“Now it is clear that Umno and BN were just pretending on the hudud issue.

“Before, Jamil said they will support the motion, but now Asyraf says Malaysia is not ready for hudud.”

Yesterday, Asyraf said Umno had been “sincere” from the start that hudud could not be implemented because of the Malaysian context, but would do so gradually.

“What Umno is doing to PAS should not be allowed to continue. Those who want to support this (hudud) might have some political agenda, but it is not for the benefit of PAS members who have made a lot of sacrifices.

“The time has come to pay attention to PAS members’ wishes.”

The PAS move to enforce the hudud penal code in Kelantan, which requires parliamentary approval for a constitutional amendment, led to its estrangement from DAP, then an ally in the Opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat and the subsequent collapse of the coalition.
