In making the call, disabled author of the guidebook “Guidance For Wheelchair Bound”, S Jeyaraj said there were numerous benefits presently for the disabled such as free road tax and discounts on car duties that many were unaware of.
He also said the government should offer more benefits to the disabled to help them better cope with the rising cost of living at present.
At the moment, Jeyaraj said, disabled persons, who like him were paralysed from the waist down, received RM350 per month from the Welfare Department.
“This amount should be increased to RM500 now, but even then it is still not enough,” he said, adding the Welfare Department should also revise the terms of allowances.
Currently, he revealed, those with disabilities who earned over RM1200 did not receive aid. Given the current economic climate, the government, he argued should dole out aid for those who make RM3000 and below instead.
Jeyaraj also called on the authorities to increase enforcement against people who abused facilities meant exclusively for the disabled such as parking lots.
“The authorities must be quick to take action against such people. There is no excuse for an able-bodied person to use a parking space meant for the disabled even if it’s for a few minutes.”
He said this included members of the disabled community who did not drive but were passengers.
“The parking spots are for disabled drivers not disabled passengers, as their drivers can drop them off and park elsewhere.”
Jeyaraj’s book, which was launched this morning, is a guide for wheelchair-bound people and their loved ones.
Also present at the launch was Archbishop Julian Leow.
Priced at RM30 per copy, “Guidance For Wheelchair Bound” can be purchased from Jeyaraj (012 979 3103) directly or SSVP State Council President N Rajenthiran (019 352 1776). Arrangements are being made for online sales as well.
