SEREMBAN: Fire broke out on the diesel locomotive of the Butterworth-bound Express Rakyat train, about a kilometre from Sungai Gadut station near here today.
The train driver suffered mild injuries on his fingers but the 309 passengers were unhurt.
Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the Express Rakyat was heading to Butterworth, Penang from Johor Bahru when the fire broke out after the engine broke down. About 80 percent of the engine and the driver’s compartments were damaged.
Firemen put out the fire in 10 minutes and prevented the blaze from spreading to the coaches.
Passengers had to walk back to the Sungai Gadut Station.
