MyKMU: Why so eager to announce appeal, MACC?

The pro-Umno portal has questioned MACC's eagerness to announce that they will likely appeal against the A-G's decision to close the cases against the PM.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should have appealed against the Attorney-General’s decision to clear the Prime Minister of criminal wrongdoing first before announcing their intentions, says pro-Umno portal MyKMU.

In a recent report by The Star Online, MACC special operations director Bahri Mohd Zin had announced it was “most likely” that the Commission would consider appealing to the A-G to reconsider his decision in the “straightforward case.”

MyKMU however said that it was the responsibility of the MACC as a law enforcement agency to analyse the A-G’s directive to close the case before making any decisions, and criticised Bahri’s announcement as having been too rushed.

“When the MACC decided to appeal to the Attorney-General, they should have made the appeal before announcing it to the masses,” they said.

“His statement was a shameful and politically charged one. The words ‘most likely’ indicate that he himself is not sure whether to appeal the decision or not.”

They said it was “common rumour” that the group conspiring to topple Prime Minister Najib Razak was being sponsored by local Chinese billionaires, and questioned whether Bahri’s quickness and eagerness to make the announcement on MACC’s behalf was an indication of some other intent.

“We are not accusing, only questioning the statement based on MACC’s eagerness to fan the flames of the issue without doing prior research on the Attorney-General’s decision,” MyKMU said.

“You’re a law enforcement agency. Act like one, not like a politician! If you’re going to play politics, then resign and enter the political arena.”

Attorney-General Apandi Ali yesterday cleared Najib of criminal offences in the two investigations. Apart from the RM2.6 billion, supposedly from a Middle Eastern donor, it was also alleged that Najib received RM42 million from SRC International.

Bahri, who was investigating alleged corruption at 1Malaysia Development Bhd was transferred to the Prime Minister’s Department in August last year but was reinstated to his post in the anti-graft body three days later.
