PUTRAJAYA:
The high cost of the upcoming Sarawak election is partly due to the rising cost of goods, the Election Commission’s (EC) deputy chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah said today.

The estimation currently stood at RM181 million, double the amount spent in the last state election, in 2011.

“It was different back then especially as prices of most goods today have increased. So don’t compare the upcoming state election with the ones prior.

“The cost to rent vehicles and helicopters, as well as food and beverages have gone up and that’s why the cost to hold the state election has also doubled.”

Speaking to reporters after the inauguration of the EC’s gallery at its headquarters here, Mohd Hashim who will assume the role of commission chairman come next week Monday, said all preparations needed for the state election have been set in place.

“We are prepared and when the state government is disbanded, we will proceed with what is necessary.”

EC chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof had earlier this week, told English daily The Star that with the number of constituencies increased from 71 to 82, the commission would have to make even more preparations for the polls.

He also said the estimated cost of transportation and rentals of 1,871 premises to be used for election purposes will be about RM87 million while allowances for returning officers and 21,000 staff is expected to reach RM40 million.

Both Abdul Aziz and Mohd Hashim attended the event this afternoon which also saw the former “clocking out” as the head of the EC.

He has held the post for seven years and is now stepping down due to the mandatory retirement age of 66.

“I will now focus on spending time with my grandchildren, something that I am really looking forward to.”
