Bersih: EC chairman’s appointment a case of status-quo

Electoral reform watchdog say someone from the “outside” should fill in the position in order to bring about change.

Mohd-Hashim-Abdullah
PETALING JAYA: Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 is disappointed with the appointment of the new Election Commission (EC) chairman because it seems the “status-quo” has been maintained.

“The EC promoted one of their own so we do not expect change from them. We are quite disappointed,” Bersih 2.0 Treasurer Thomas Fann said in a press conference.

Thomas said the appointment of former EC deputy chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah as the new head of the commission was flawed, as change in the EC could only be carried out by people “outside” the system.

He then suggested that a former legislator could fill the position in order to restore faith in the commission.

“Perhaps a former judge could come in and this could restore some confidence in the EC. But unfortunately, they did not take that bold step.”

Thomas however said that Bersih 2.0 would perhaps invite Hisham to one of their dialogues in the future.

“This way we can see how he handles the feedback we have and see what he has to say about it.”
