Programme organiser Azmin Ishak said the vegetables were contributed by individuals and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority.
Other household goods such as clothing were among the items given away at the 120 stalls involved in the charity programme.
More than 2,000 visitors came today…this has exceeded our expectations,” said Azmin. “This is the highest number since we started organising the market over a year ago.”
Among those taking part was Nur Liza Hud, 34, who said she and five other family members joined the Free Market Putrajaya event after finding out about it on social media.
“We are giving away baju kurung which can still be worn, baby strollers and meehoon goreng to visitors at the square,” she said, adding it was the first time her family got involved in such a charity event.
She said it was appropriate for such programmes to be held in the federal administrative territory, as not all civil servants were well to do and would appreciate the gesture.
Azmin said the free market concept aimed to fulfill each other’s needs in the community. Last year alone, about 70 free market programmes had been organised nationwide by him and his friends, as well as other individuals.
