KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak wanted his son Najib to stay away from politics, and enter the corporate world instead.

Speaking at a Special Commemorative Seminar on Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister Najib Razak said his father wanted him to be an accountant.

“Back then, he thought I was too quiet and introverted for the rough and tumble of politics!”

At the time of his father’s passing, Najib was only 22 and was unsure if he was ready to fill Razak’s shoes.

However, Razak’s work ethics and dedication to his job and country was what set Najib on the road to politics when he contested in his father’s Pekan (Pahang) constituency.

Najib said Razak travelled an average of 60,000 miles a year to personally inspect projects and ensure targets were met.

“He knew every single District Officer in the country and even many of the Penghulus in the Mukims.”

Najib said his father’s numerous legacies has inspired him and he has strived to continue his father’s work.

Unable to contain his emotions, Najib said his father truly deserved to be called the Father of Development.

“He gave his life for the country.

“Today, 40 years after his passing, I stand before you to say that I am proud to be his son and that every day, I work to live up to that lineage,” he said, welling-up.

Najib added that Razak was an example for him and an inspiration to all.
