Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said Then’s family members would head to Manila this week, accompanied by the police who will assist them in tending to the remains.
“It is the family’s wish not to bring his body back. We respect this and we are working with Wisma Putra to help them (the family) tend to his remains.
“They will bring his ashes back here,” he said to reporters at a press conference at the Bukit Aman police headquarters here today.
Then, 39, was reportedly beheaded on November 11 last year according to the Philippines’ military, following “a breakdown in communications” during negotiations after he was kidnapped in May by Islamic militant group Abu Sayyaf.
On another note, Khalid said investigations on debt-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) were ongoing and police were currently perusing 4,000 documents, including emails related to convicted former PetroSaudi International executive Andre Xavier Justo.
In December last year, a team of police officers from Bukit Aman flew to Thailand to speak to Justo and record his statement as part of their investigations into 1MDB.
Justo is serving time in prison for trying to blackmail his former employer, PetroSaudi International, by using information from the 90 gigabytes of data he stole from them earlier.
