PETALING JAYA:
Tengku Puan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah has characterised the three-month moratorium on bauxite mining as “pathetic.”

“Alhamdulillah… but three months only?” she wrote on Instagram, along with a photo of a newspaper that front-paged the announcement yesterday.

Instagram followers echoed her sentiment, stating that three months was too short a period for any significant progress to be made.

Instagram user, ‘wanmariamizza’ said it was “very saddening” as her child itched and coughed because of the pollution.

Another user, ‘ismail.norlida’ noted that it “made no sense” to destroy the environment in such manner.

Tunku Azizah previously spoke out on the issue and said the sand in front of her beach home in Kuantan had turned red from bauxite mining waste flowing into waterways.

Yesterday, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar announced a three-month mining ban for a clean-up exercise, in addition to implementing initiatives for pollution prevention.
