PETALING JAYA:
Unable to cope with operational costs and their inability to secure loans for new vehicles, many school bus drivers in Sabah are ceasing services altogether, The Borneo Post reported today.

Chairman of the Sri Tanjung Tawau School bus driver operator association, Chang Nyuk Sah, confirmed 84 of its 134 members had ceased operations.

“These school bus operators want to buy new vehicles to replace their old ones but they are unable to get a loan so they have to stop operating,” Chang was quoted by the East Malaysian daily as saying.

He also said that the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board policy did not allow for buses over 30 years old to continue being in operation.

Chang said there are two other associations for school bus operators in Tawau, but did not know if any of their members as well had ceased services.

Previously, it was reported that president of the Sabah West Coast School Bus Association, Kenny Wong, had said some 30 per cent of its operators would cease services this year due to higher operational costs, higher living costs and the financial burden of the Goods and Services Tax (GST)
