The refrigerator is an essential kitchen appliance in every household. Many homeowners assume as long as the inside of the refrigerator is cold, there isn’t much to worry about.

However, all appliances experience wear and tear, and require regular servicing to maintain efficiency. Here are four warning signs your refrigerator might be in need of maintenance or repair.

1. Frost buildup

Frost buildup is normal for a refrigerator with a freezer, but thick layers of ice should be a matter of concern as this could reduce its energy efficiency, which would lead to an increase in your electricity bill.

Thankfully the fix is simple enough and can be done without calling in a professional – simply remove the food from your freezer and turn off the power, allowing the appliance to defrost.

To speed up the process, place a bowl of hot water inside the freezer and reheat it every 15 minutes.

2. Spike in electricity bills

Inefficient electrical appliances are often the root cause of a spike in your electricity bill. Have an electrician check on your compressor appliances, including the refrigerator, to ensure they are running optimally.

3. Loud noises

Occasional low humming sounds from your fridge are normal, but if the appliance starts emitting consistent loud buzzing or other noises that seem out of the ordinary, it could be due to loose components.

Call in a professional to diagnose and resolve this issue.

4. Spoiled food

Food should be kept at or below 4°C to keep it fresh and safe for consumption. If your food is spoiling prematurely or your butter is turning soft, it may indicate a malfunction that has caused your refrigerator to not maintain its optimal temperature.

Once again, call a professional; don’t attempt to make any repairs on your own unless you are qualified to do so.
