When listing out your essential home electrical appliances, air conditioners (AC) are certainly high up on the list.

While air conditioners are essential to help us beat the all-year heat and even during heatwaves, they are without a doubt one of the reasons why your electricity bills are so high.

That being said, there are still ways to maintain your comfort level and save both energy and money. Use these tips as a guide.

1. Maintain an optimal temperature

The ideal AC temperature to cool your room and save energy is between 23 to 25 degrees Celsius.

It is not necessary to set the temperature to the lowest at 16 degrees Celsius because the lower the temperature, the higher the energy consumption.

2. Clean filters regularly

Switching on air conditioners with clean filters can certainly reduce its energy consumption. Dust and dirt are everywhere and can accumulate on your air conditioners’ filters.

Dirty filters allow bacteria to thrive and the AC unit would consequently be less efficient, release an awful smell or even trigger an allergic reaction.

Simply detach the filter, wash with water, let it dry and put it back in. However, to avoid mishaps in DIY cleaning, it is highly recommended that you seek professional services.

3. Frequency of switching on and off

Frequently switching your AC on and off can have a negative impact on your electricity bills!

The more frequently the AC is switched on or off, the higher the energy consumption.

4. Conduct regular AC servicing

Servicing your ACs regularly can ensure your air conditioning units are functioning at their best.

In the long run, regular service can reduce your electricity bills and avoid future repairs or replacements, thereby saving you a lot of money.

5. Use ceiling fan as a cooling assistant

Ceiling fans function to circulate air in your room and can be used in conjunction with air conditioner usage.

Simply switch off your air conditioner once the room is cooled then turn on your ceiling fan. By doing so, you can reduce the cost of your electricity bill by at least 5%.

6. Turn your air conditioner off when you leave

While this is considered a no-brainer tip, you’d be surprised at how many of us forget to switch off the air conditioner when we’re about to leave the house.

You can easily prevent high electricity bills by switching off your air conditioner, and, to avoid returning to an oven-like space, be sure to keep your windows and curtains and shades closed before leaving.
