Home appliances can be pricey and replacing a refrigerator, oven or washing machine can cost a pretty penny.

Since you’ve already spent a substantial amount on purchasing these electrical appliances, it makes good sense to maintain it so it serves you for a longer period.

Here are some simple tips that will make a big difference to how long your electrical appliances remain in good working condition.

1. Keep the refrigerator clean

Easier said than done. Keeping the refrigerator clean isn’t just about wiping down the interior with a damp rag or throwing out leftovers that have turned stale.

What maintains the air cool in a refrigerator are the gaskets which is the plastic strip that forms a seal between the refrigerator and doors.

The elasticity of the strip helps form a better seal which reduces the amount of cool air escaping from the refrigerator.

To keep the strip as elastic as possible, make sure to regularly wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

Besides that, a dirty refrigerator condenser coil restricts airflow which can cause overheating and lead to an eventual breakdown.

To clean your fridge’s condenser coil, simply remove your fridge’s kick plate and clean the coils with a vacuum.

2. Don’t overload the washing machine

This tip is that simple! Always ensure the appropriate quantity of clothes that you throw into the wash.

Jamming clothes into the washing machine causes it to use more energy to spin. This generates strain and can eventually wear out the machine’s motor, transmission, belts, and other parts.

Underloading the washing machine is equally harmful as small loads can cause off-balance washing cycles that strain the driver components in the machine.

3. Fix it before it’s too late

Attend to minor problems as soon as you detect them. (Rawpixel pic)

The most common mistake most people make is ignoring minor problems that crop up.

If you hear unusual noises or notice leaks in an electrical appliance, make sure it is checked by a professional.

Minor problems that are left unchecked will become major issues down the line that will probably mean the appliance has to be replaced.
