10 weekend jobs to supplement your income

Looking to earn that little bit extra on your days off? Here are some options you could explore.

Demand for rides to entertainment, food and shopping venues is high on weekends, so why not be a rideshare driver?

Making ends meet can be tough, especially when you live in a big and expensive city. Many people want to make more money than they already do, and weekend jobs are the best ways to do this.

Here are some options you could look into if you are looking to earn that little bit extra.

1. Rideshare driver

Driving for a rideshare company enables you to work whenever you want, including just on weekends, when demand is high for rides to entertainment, food and shopping venues.

Many drivers work for multiple services to expand their earning opportunities. Being a Grab driver, for instance, could earn you between RM10 and RM15 per hour.

2. Food delivery

Related to the above, there are numerous service providers available as the demand for home-delivered food and groceries has increased tremendously in recent times. Companies such as GrabFood and Foodpanda allow you to work as a driver on your own terms.

Furthermore, people order more on Friday evenings and weekends, increasing your earning potential. While it is a competitive industry, you could easily earn RM15 an hour by delivering food to hungry folks.

3. Bartender

Bars experience high levels of traffic on weekends, even with social distancing, making it a viable option if you are savvy with your alcohol.

Obviously you would need to know how to mix drinks, on top of having a lively personality, good listening abilities, and customer-service skills.

In Kuala Lumpur, successful bartenders can earn upwards of RM200 a night.

4. Waiter

This is another good option if you are keen on the food and beverage industry – plus, you could potentially be provided free food during your working hours.

You could work a full shift or on an hourly basis, depending on your needs and the requirements of the establishment. The average pay for a waiter is RM10 per hour, so if you spend just four hours at work, you would be able to make enough to cover a significant chunk of your expenses.

5. Freelance writer/editor

Freelance writers and editors create content for websites and compose written materials such as direct-marketing pieces, business reports, and feature articles. Editors proofread writing, correct grammar, and modify writing to enhance readability.

Freelance writers and editors generally earn RM30 to RM80 per hour, depending on the type of work.

6. Web designer

Web designers incorporate content, graphics, and video into websites, requiring them to have a strong knowledge of desktop web-authoring tools, as well as writing and graphic-design skills.

Some freelance web designers partner with writers and graphic designers to complete projects.

Much of this development work can be conducted on weekends, even though communication with clients might be required on weekdays. Web designers earn an average of RM25 to RM35 per hour.

7. Graphic designer

Graphic designers translate the ideas of clients into visuals, and create eye-catching designs for websites, brochures, logos, packaging, advertisements, reports and presentations.

They must possess creativity and aesthetic sensibility, and have expertise working with desktop design programs. Web development and writing skills are helpful if the designer is working without partners.

Graphic designers earn an average of RM20 to RM30 per hour.

8. Translator

If you are a pro in more than one language, why not use this to earn some extra income? Look for companies that require translation work, though you would need to be well-versed in both speaking and writing.

9. Tutor

If you have great knowledge on a specific subject such as English, science or maths, consider becoming a part-time teacher.

The pay depends on factors such as the subject, the age range of students, your experience, and the platform (in-person or online). You could also adjust your fees depending on whether students come to you, or you to them.

The earning potential is pretty good, at about RM50 an hour.

10. Music teacher

If you know how to play the guitar, piano, violin, drums, or any other instrument – including singing – you could opt to become a music teacher, by holding classes at home or at a designated teaching centre.

There is no fixed price – a lot of it depends on your expertise and experience, the ability level of the student, and whether you conduct individual or group lessons.

If you have a lot of experience, you could charge up to RM100 per hour, but if you are a beginner, you might get RM20 to RM25 for an hour.
